Israeli soldier posts Instagram image of Palestinian child in crosshairs of rifle
An Israeli soldier has sparked outrage by posting a photograph appearing to show the back of a Palestinian boy’s head in the crosshairs of his sniper rifle on a social networking site.
The context of the picture, posted on the personal Instagram site of Mor Ostrovski, 20, could not be verified but the aggressive message is clear. The minarets and Arabic architecture of the village captured in the background suggest the boy and the town are Palestinian. Ostrovski is an Israeli soldier in a sniper unit.
“Israeli massacres in Gaza result in mass civilian killings,” official news agency WAFA, run by the Palestinian government in the West Bank, reported Monday. “At least 515 Palestinians have been killed,” the news agency said.
It’s unclear how many of the dead in Gaza were militants. The United Nations has estimated that 80% were civilians.
More than 83,000 Palestinians have taken refuge in U.N. facilities.
STOP THE GENOCIDE AGAINST PALESTINIAN IN APARTHEID ISRAEL . #GazaUnderAttack
There are 147 articles of the Fourth Geneva Convention that were supposed to protect everyone in Gaza. And if you look at all of the human rights reports that have been produced on Gaza, you will see that Israel has violated almost each and every one of these 147 articles of the Fourth Geneva Convention …….
Israeli Invasion and Gasa Natural Gaz
The military occupation of Gaza is intent upon transferring the sovereignty of the gas fields to Israel in violation of international law.
What can we expect in the wake of the invasion?!
In 2007, a year before Operation Cast Lead, former Israeli Defence Force (IDF) chief of staff Moshe Ya’alon focused on the 1.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas discovered in 2000 off the Gaza coast, valued at $4 billion.
In the wake of the invasion, Palestinian gas fields were de facto confiscated by Israel in derogation of international law
A year following “Operation Cast Lead”, Tel Aviv announced the discovery of the Leviathan natural gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean “off the coast of Israel.”
At the time the gas field was: “ … the most prominent field ever found in the sub-explored area of the Levantine Basin, which covers about 83,000 square kilometres of the eastern Mediterranean region.” (i)
The chief obstacle is that much of the 122 trillion cubic feet of gas and 1.6 billion barrels of oil in the Levant Basin Province lies in territorial waters where borders are hotly disputed between Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and Cyprus.
The Gazan gas fields are part of the broader Levant assessment area.
This appears to be behind Prime Minister Netanyahu’s announcement in February 2011 that it was now time to seal the Gaza gas deal.
The Israel-Palestine conflict is clearly not about Hamas firing rockets but about resources. In an age of expensive energy, competition to dominate regional fossil fuels are increasingly influencing the critical decisions that can inflame war.
